Application Checklist

The deadline for application for the program is February 15 of the respective year. Applications arriving after that date will not be considered.

To apply, please:

  1. Fill in the online application form.
  2. Upload all the following documents via our registration data bank:
    • a statement of interest written in English. Please write at most two pages focusing on your reasons for applying and your area of interest in relation to the four areas of specialization offered in the Saarbrücken Masters Program.

      Note: Specialisation is not required, in this case you can leave this part in your statement. Choosing “no specialisation“ does not decrease your chances of being accepted to the program. You can also choose one at a later stage of your studies.

    • School-leaving certificate giving you the right of entry to higher education in the applicant´s home country with individual grades.
    • your Bachelor's degree
    • a transcript of academic records
    • Please make sure to upload these 3 documents as a single pdf-document!
    • a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), written in English
  3. Send us certified hard copies of:
    • School-leaving certificate giving you the right of entry to higher education in the applicant´s home country with individual grades.
    • your Bachelor's degree
    • certificates attesting to the fulfillment of the language requirements
  4. Ask two referees of your choice to send us Letters of Recommendation.

Important notes

If your original documents are in a language other than English or German, please also submit certified translations.

Please also note that we cannot return any documents that you send us.

Language Requirements

  • TOEFL internet-based test – at least 79

    Important: Enter the TOEFL code number 8497 for Saarland University-Dept. Computational Linguistics and Phonetics on your answer sheets when you sit for the examination. Please do not upload or send us a copy of the student's score report for the TOEFL. We can only accept official score reports sent to us directly by the TOEFL organization.
    Please note: Exceptions are only made for native speakers and those who hold a degree of a University in a country, where English is the mother tongue. It is not sufficient to state that English is the language of instruction at your current university!

  • TOEFL computer-based test – at least 213
  • TOEFL paper-based test – at least 550
  • Cambridge Proficiency Exam – pass.
  • Cambridge CAE Advanced – grade of A or B.
  • IELTS score of at least 6.5
  • For Germans: Certification of at least 5 years of English at school with an average mark of at least 3.5 in the German marking system from the two final years will also fill the language requirement.

Letters of Recommendation

Your application has to be accompanied by Letters of Recommendation by two referees (usually professors or employers).
Provide the names of 2 referees of your choice on the application form. Using the email address you provide, your referees will be contacted and asked to upload letters of recommendation. Please note that only official affiliation e-mail addresses and recommendation letters with letterhead and signature will be considered valid.
It is the applicant´s responsibility to inform their referees of their application and make sure that the letters reach us on time.
